# 1974 Discovery of Code 19

The exact date of Dr. Rashad Khalifa’s discovery of the Quran’s mathematical code based on the number 19 was January 1974. He confirms this in a recorded sermon, around the 7-minute, 30-second mark, where he reflects on the moment the number 19 emerged as the common denominator throughout the Quran.

Dr. Khalifa further explains that January 1974 corresponds with the final month of Hijri year 1393, and that the numerical alignment—19 × 74 = 1406—marks the significance of this revelation. He also references three dating systems: the Christian calendar (1974), the Hijri calendar (1393), and a Quranic calendar, all converging around this event.

> (7:23) And I was able to pin down the time of the revelation of the miracle to one month. (7:30) When the number 19, as the common denominator throughout the Quran, became a reality, that (7:37) was **January 1974**. (7:48) And this corresponded to the last month, this is the first month of 1974, corresponds to (7:56) the last month of 1393. (8:02) This is from this point, from 1393 of Hijrah. (8:08) So from the time of revelation of the Quran, you just add the 13. (8:16) So here we have three dating systems, which gives us, happily, three years divided by (8:24) 19, every 19 years. (8:27) But anyway, we have the Christian era, from the time of Jesus, 1974, from the time of (8:37) Hijrah, 1393, from the time of revelation of the Quran, this time here, you can call (8:44) it Quranic calendar, Hijrah calendar, or Christian calendar. (8:48) So when you add these to get from time zero, from the revelation of the Quran, the total (8:55) is 1406. (8:59) This is the time of revelation of the miracle. (9:03) And this equals 19 times 74. (9:14) You can see the connection, don't you? (9:17) And 74 is the surah where the number 19 is mentioned.

This date is independently corroborated in the academic article *"Sectarian Islam in America: The Case of United Submitters International—The Foundation"* by Abdurrahman Saaleh (Islamic Studies, Vol. 55, No. 3/4, 2016, p. 253. [JSTOR link](https://www.jstor.org/stable/44739746)). Though the author is a Sunni academic and does not accept Rashad Khalifa as a messenger, he accurately notes that January 1974 is the date Khalifa associated with the discovery of the number 19 in the Quran’s structure. He also cites a 1974 lecture delivered by Dr. Khalifa in Damascus, titled: *Tisʿat ʿAshar: Dalālāt Jadīdah fī Iʿjāz al-Qurʾān* ("Nineteen: New Arguments on the Miraculous Nature of the Qur'an").

It's also noteworthy that, before 1974, Dr. Khalifa makes no mention in any of his work of the connection between the number 19 and the Quran's mathematical structure. Even in his 1973 publication, *"Miracle of the Quran: Significance of the Mysterious Alphabets"* (St. Louis, MO: Islamic Productions International), there is no mention of the number 19 in relation to the Quranic initials. This further confirms that the discovery came after that publication, solidifying January 1974 as the breakthrough moment.
