Summary Capital Punishemnt Offenses
There are four modes of execution in Torah law: • Sekilah – stoning • Sereifah – burning (with molten lead down the throat, not fire) • Hereg – beheading • Chenek – strangulation Liable to stoning:
Blasphemy (Leviticus 24:16)
Idolatry – serving other gods (Deuteronomy 17:2–5)
Molech worship (child sacrifice) (Leviticus 20:2–5)
Necromancy / sorcery (Deuteronomy 18:11)
Desecrating Shabbat (Numbers 15:32–36)
Certain forms of incest (relations with mother, father’s wife, daughter-in-law, etc.) (Leviticus 20)
Male homosexual relations (Leviticus 20:13)
Bestiality (Exodus 22:19; Leviticus 20:15–16)
Rebellious son (Deuteronomy 21:18–21)
False prophet (Deuteronomy 18:20)
One who entices others to idolatry (Deuteronomy 13:6–10)
Liable to burning:
A man who has relations with his daughter or granddaughter (Leviticus 20:14).
A man with his daughter-in-law (Leviticus 20:12).
A kohen’s daughter who commits adultery (Leviticus 21:9).
Liable to beheading
Murder (Exodus 21:12).
A city that goes to idolatry (Ir Hanidachat, Deuteronomy 13:13–19).
Liable to strangulation:
Adultery with a married woman (Leviticus 20:10).
Striking or cursing father or mother (Exodus 21:15, 17).
Kidnapping and selling a fellow Jew (Exodus 21:16).
False witnesses in capital cases (Deuteronomy 19:19).
Incest with relatives not listed under stoning (Leviticus 18 & 20).
