# Shoe ablution

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ رَأَيْتُكَ تَصْنَعُ أَرْبَعًا لَمْ أَرَ أَحَدًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِكَ يَصْنَعُهَا‏.‏ قَالَ مَا هِيَ يَا ابْنَ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ رَأَيْتُكَ لاَ تَمَسُّ مِنَ الأَرْكَانِ إِلاَّ الْيَمَانِيَيْنِ، وَرَأَيْتُكَ تَلْبَسُ النِّعَالَ السِّبْتِيَّةَ، وَرَأَيْتُكَ تَصْبُغُ بِالصُّفْرَةِ، وَرَأَيْتُكَ إِذَا كُنْتَ بِمَكَّةَ أَهَلَّ النَّاسُ إِذَا رَأَوُا الْهِلاَلَ، وَلَمْ تُهِلَّ أَنْتَ حَتَّى كَانَ يَوْمَ التَّرْوِيَةِ‏.‏ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ أَمَّا الأَرْكَانُ فَإِنِّي لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَمَسُّ إِلاَّ الْيَمَانِيَيْنِ، وَأَمَّا النِّعَالُ السِّبْتِيَّةُ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَلْبَسُ النِّعَالَ الَّتِي لَيْسَ فِيهَا شَعَرٌ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ فِيهَا فَأَنَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَلْبَسَهَا، وَأَمَّا الصُّفْرَةُ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَصْبُغُ بِهَا، فَأَنَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَصْبُغَ بِهَا وَأَمَّا الإِهْلاَلُ فَإِنِّي لَمْ أَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُهِلُّ حَتَّى تَنْبَعِثَ بِهِ رَاحِلَتُهُ‏.‏

Narrated Said Al-Maqburi: 'Ubai bin Juraij said to Abdullah Ben Umar, "I see you doing four things which are not done by your friends." Ibn Umar said, "What are they, O Ibn Juraij?" He said, "I see that you do not touch except the two Yemenite corners of the Kaba (while performing the Tawaf): and I see you wearing the Sabtiyya shoes; and I see you dyeing (your hair) with Sufra; and I see that when you are in Mecca, the people assume the state of Ihram on seeing the crescent (on the first day of Dhul-Hijja) while you do not assume the state of Ihram till the Day of Tarwiya (8th Dhul Hijja)." Abdullah bin Umar said to him, "As for the corners of the Kaba, I have not seen Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) touching except the two Yemenite corners, As for the Sabtiyya shoes, <mark style="color:red;">**I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) wearing leather shoes that had no hair, and he used to perform the ablution while wearing them.**</mark> Therefore, I like to wear such shoes. As regards dyeing with Sufra, I saw Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) dyeing his hair with it, so I like to dye (my hair) with it. As regards the crescent (of Dhul-Hijja), I have not seen Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) assuming the state of Ihram till his she-camel set out (on the 8th of Dhul-Hijja).

حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، وَمُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، - وَهَذَا لَفْظُ حَفْصٍ - عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ أَتَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم سُبَاطَةَ قَوْمٍ فَبَالَ قَائِمًا ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ قَالَ فَذَهَبْتُ أَتَبَاعَدُ فَدَعَانِي حَتَّى كُنْتُ عِنْدَ عَقِبِهِ ‏.‏

Narrated Hudhaifah: The Apostle of Allaah ( sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ) came to a midden of some people and urinated while standing. <mark style="color:red;">He then asked for water and wiped his shoes (leather socks).</mark>\
Abu Dawud said: Musaddad, a narrator, reported: I went far away from him. He then called me and I reached just near his heals.

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الدِّرْهَمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ دَاوُدَ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَرِيرٍ، أَنَّ جَرِيرًا، بَالَ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ فَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ وَقَالَ مَا يَمْنَعُنِي أَنْ أَمْسَحَ وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَمْسَحُ <mark style="color:red;">قَالُوا إِنَّمَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ قَبْلَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ ‏.‏ قَالَ مَا أَسْلَمْتُ إِلاَّ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ ‏.‏</mark>

Abu Zur’ah b. ‘Amr b. Jarir said: Jarir urinated. He then performed ablution and wiped over the socks. He said: What can prevent me from wiping (over the socks); I saw the Messenger of Allah (doing so). They (the people) said: <mark style="color:red;">This was before the revelation of Surat al-Ma’idah. He replied: I embraced Islam after the revelation of Surat al-Ma’idah.</mark>

<p align="right">أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا ذَهَبَ الْمَذْهَبَ أَبْعَدَ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ لِحَاجَتِهِ - وَهُوَ فِي بَعْضِ أَسْفَارِهِ - فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ ائْتِنِي بِوَضُوءٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ‏.‏ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ هُوَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ الْقَارِئُ ‏.‏</p>

It was narrated from Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah that when the Prophet (ﷺ) would go away (to relieve himself) he would go far away. He went to relieve himself when he was on one of his journeys, and said: "Bring me (water for) Wudu'." So I brought him (water for) Wudu', and he performed Wudu' and wiped over his Khuffs. The Shaikh \[1] said: "Isma'il (one of the narrators) is Ibn Ja'far bin Abi Kathir Al-Qari.\
\[1] Meaning the author, and it appears that Ibn As-Sunni who heard the text, said this.
