Sura 8 & 9 Placement
Abdullah narrated to us, Muhammad bin Bashar narrated to us, Yahya bin Saeed and Muhammad bin Ja'far and Ibn Abi 'Adi and Sahl bin Yusuf said: Awf bin Abi Jumaila narrated to us, he said: Yazid Al-Farisi narrated to me, he said: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me, he said: I asked Uthman, "What made you put Al-Anfal, which is from the Mathani, next to Bara’ah, which is from the Mi'in, and you did not write between them 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful', and you placed them among the Seven Long Surahs?" Uthman said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to receive revelations of the Qur'an, and when something was revealed to him, he would call some of those who used to write, and he would say: 'Put these verses in the Surah in which such-and-such is mentioned,' and when a verse was revealed to him, he would say: 'Put this verse in the Surah in which such-and-such is mentioned.' Al-Anfal was among the first that was revealed in Medina and Bara’ah was among the last of the Qur'an, and its story was similar to its story, so I thought it was part of it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not explain to us that it was from it, so because of that I placed them together and did not write 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' between them, and placed them among the Seven Long Surahs."
حدّثنا عبد الله، حدّثنا محمد بن بشار، حدّثنا يحيى بن سعيد، ومحمد بن جعفر، وابن أبي عدي وسهل بن يوسف قالوا: حدّثنا عوف بن أبي جميلة قال: حدّثني يزيد الفارسي قال: حدّثني ابن عباس رضي الله عنه قال: قلت لعثمان ما حملكم على أن عمدتم إلى الأنفال وهي من المثاني، وإلى براءة وهي من المئين فقرنتم بينهما ولم تكتبوا بينهما بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ووضعتموهما في السبع الطوال؟ قال عثمان: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ينزل عليه الزمان وهو ينزل عليه السور ذات العدد، فكان إذا نزل عليه الشيء دعا بعض من كان يكتب فيقول ضعوا هؤلاء الآيات في السورة التي يذكر فيها كذا وكذا، وإذا نزلت عليه الآية فيقول ضعوا هذه الآية في السورة التي يذكر فيها كذا وكذا، وكانت الأنفال من أول ما أنزل بالمدينة وكانت براءة من آخر القرآن وكانت قصتها شبيهة بقصتها فظننت أنها منها، ولم يبيّن لنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أنها منها، فمن أجل ذلك قرنت بينهما ولم أكتب بينهما سطر بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم، ووضعتمها في السبع الطوال.
