Ibn Masoud Disrespects Zaid Ibn Thabit
Interestingly, in conjunction with complaining about having his mushaf confiscated, he states that he knew the Quran better than anyone, including Zaid, but also that he knew precisely where each Sura was revealed. This shows a potential connection with the point that 9:128-129 was not part of the Quran due to the discrepancy of two Meccan verses being added to a Medinan sura.
Narrated Abdullah: Muhammad bin Uthman al-Issa narrated to us, saying: Ismail bin Bahram narrated to us, saying: Sufyan bin Uyaynah narrated to us from Humayd bin Maisarah(1) from Abi al-Sihah from Masruq, who said: Abdullah and Hudhayfah and Abu Musa were in the house of Abu Musa, and Hudhayfah said: "As for you, O Abdullah bin Qays(2), you went to the people of Basra as an emir and teacher, and they took from your manners and recitation. As for you, O Abdullah bin Mas'ud, you went to the people of Kufa as a teacher, and they took from your manners and recitation." Abdullah said: "Indeed, if I do not teach them, and there is no verse from the Book of Allah except that I know where it was revealed and about whom it was revealed. If I knew anyone more knowledgeable about the Book of Allah than me, and the camels could reach him, I would travel to him."
Narrated Abdullah: Mansur bin Sayyar narrated to us, saying: Qaismah narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us from Abu Ishaq from Humayd bin Malik, who said: Abdullah said: "Indeed, I have read seventy surahs from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and Zaid bin Thabit was a young boy playing with the children."
Ibn Mas'ud delivered a sermon on the pulpit and said: {Whoever misappropriates something will come with what he misappropriated on the Day of Resurrection} (S 3:161). Value your mushafs, how do you command me to read according to the recitation of Zaid bin Thabit, when I have recited directly from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) seventy-odd surahs, and Zaid bin Thabit was a young boy with two braids playing with the children. By Allah, no part of the Qur'an was revealed except that I know the reason for its revelation, and if I knew anyone more knowledgeable than me about the Book of Allah, I would travel to him. Shaqiq said: He descended from the pulpit and sat among the circles, and no one objected to anything he said.
