Two Witnesses
The following Hadith indicates that at least two witnesses were required before a verse could be added to the Quran.
Narrated Abdullah, he said: Abu Tahir narrated to us, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us and Ibn Abi al-Zinad informed me, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, he said: When the killing of the Qur'an reciters became widespread on that day, Abu Bakr feared that the Qur'an might be lost. So he said to Umar ibn al-Khattab and Zaid ibn Thabit, "Sit at the door of the mosque, and if anyone comes to you with two witnesses about anything from the Book of Allah, write it down."
Narrated Abdullah, he said: Amr ibn Ali ibn Bahr narrated to us, saying: Abu Dawud narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, saying: Al-Zuhri narrated to us, saying: Ubayd ibn al-Sabbaq informed me that Zaid ibn Thabit narrated to him, he said: Abu Bakr sent for me after the deaths of the people of Yamama, and Umar was with him. He said, "This one has come to me and informed me that the killing has become widespread among the Qur'an reciters, and I fear that the killing will become more widespread."
