Prophet Ascribed to Fal (Fortune Telling)

حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ عَدْوَى وَلاَ طِيَرَةَ، وَيُعْجِبُنِي الْفَأْلُ الصَّالِحُ، الْكَلِمَةُ الْحَسَنَةُ ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No 'Adwa (no contagious disease), nor Tiyara (bad omens), but I like the good Fal.

In Arabic, "fal" (فَلّ) refers to divination or fortune-telling. It can also be used in a more general sense to describe a good omen.

[Quran 36:18] They said, "We consider you bad omens. Unless you refrain, we will surely stone you, or afflict you with painful retribution."

(١٨) قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهُوا۟ لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُم مِّنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

[Quran 36:19] They said, "Your omen depends on your response, now that you have been reminded. Indeed, you are transgressing people."

(١٩) قَالُوا۟ طَـٰٓئِرُكُم مَّعَكُمْ أَئِن ذُكِّرْتُم بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّسْرِفُونَ
