# Garlic and Onions Prohibition

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ فِي غَزْوَةِ خَيْبَرَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ ـ يَعْنِي الثُّومَ ـ فَلاَ يَقْرَبَنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Ibn \`Umar: During the holy battle of Khaibar the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever ate from this plant (i.e. garlic) should not enter our mosque." Sahih al-Bukhari 853 \ ***

Narrated Ata': I heard Jabir bin Abdullah saying, "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Whoever eats (from) this plant (he meant garlic) should keep away from our mosque." I said, "What does he mean by that?" He replied, "I think he means only raw garlic." Sahih al-Bukhari 854 \ ***

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُفَيْرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، زَعَمَ عَطَاءٌ أَنَّ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، زَعَمَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ ثُومًا أَوْ بَصَلاً فَلْيَعْتَزِلْنَا ـ أَوْ قَالَ ـ فَلْيَعْتَزِلْ مَسْجِدَنَا، وَلْيَقْعُدْ فِي بَيْتِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ وَأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أُتِيَ بِقِدْرٍ فِيهِ خَضِرَاتٌ مِنْ بُقُولٍ، فَوَجَدَ لَهَا رِيحًا فَسَأَلَ فَأُخْبِرَ بِمَا فِيهَا مِنَ الْبُقُولِ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ قَرِّبُوهَا ‏"‏ إِلَى بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ كَانَ مَعَهُ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ كَرِهَ أَكْلَهَا قَالَ ‏"‏ كُلْ فَإِنِّي أُنَاجِي مَنْ لاَ تُنَاجِي ‏"‏‏.‏ وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنِ ابْنِ وَهْبٍ أُتِيَ بِبَدْرٍ‏.‏ قَالَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ يَعْنِي طَبَقًا فِيهِ خُضَرَاتٌ‏.‏ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ اللَّيْثُ وَأَبُو صَفْوَانَ عَنْ يُونُسَ قِصَّةَ الْقِدْرِ، فَلاَ أَدْرِي هُوَ مِنْ قَوْلِ الزُّهْرِيِّ أَوْ فِي الْحَدِيثِ‏.‏

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever eats garlic or onion should keep away from our mosque or should remain in his house." (Jabir bin Abdullah, in another narration said, "Once a big pot containing cooked vegetables was brought. On finding unpleasant smell coming from it, the Prophet (ﷺ) asked, 'What is in it?' He was told all the names of the vegetables that were in it. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered that it should be brought near to some of his companions who were with him. When the Prophet (ﷺ) saw it he disliked to eat it and said, 'Eat. (I don't eat) for I converse with those whom you don't converse with (i.e. the angels). Sahih al-Bukhari 855 \ ***

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَنَسًا مَا سَمِعْتَ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي الثُّومِ فَقَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ فَلاَ يَقْرَبْنَا، أَوْ لاَ يُصَلِّيَنَّ مَعَنَا ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Abdul Aziz: A man asked Anas, "What did you hear from the Prophet (ﷺ) about garlic?" He said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Whoever has eaten this plant should neither come near us nor pray with us." Sahih al-Bukhari 856 \ ***

حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، وَسَالِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ عَنْ أَكْلِ الثَّوْمِ، وَعَنْ لُحُومِ الْحُمُرِ الأَهْلِيَّةِ‏.‏ نَهَى عَنْ أَكْلِ الثَّوْمِ هُوَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ وَحْدَهُ‏.‏ وَلُحُومُ الْحُمُرِ الأَهْلِيَّةِ عَنْ سَالِمٍ‏.‏

Narrated Ibn \`Umar: On the day of Khaiber, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade the eating of garlic and the meat of donkeys. Sahih al-Bukhari 4215 \ ***

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، قَالَ قِيلَ لأَنَسٍ مَا سَمِعْتَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي الثُّومِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ فَلاَ يَقْرَبَنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Abdul Aziz: It was said to Anas "What did you hear the Prophet (ﷺ) saying about garlic?" Anas replied, "Whoever has eaten (garlic) should not approach our mosque." Sahih al-Bukhari 5451 \ ***

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو صَفْوَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءٌ، أَنَّ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ زَعَمَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ ثُومًا أَوْ بَصَلاً فَلْيَعْتَزِلْنَا، أَوْ لِيَعْتَزِلْ مَسْجِدَنَا ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Jabir bin \`Abdullah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever has eaten garlic or onion should keep away from us (or should keep away from our mosque).' Sahih al-Bukhari 5452 \ ***

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، - وَهُوَ الْقَطَّانُ - عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ فِي غَزْوَةِ خَيْبَرَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ - يَعْنِي الثُّومَ - فَلاَ يَأْتِيَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ فِي غَزْوَةٍ ‏.‏ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ خَيْبَرَ ‏.‏

Ibn 'Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said during the battle of Khaybar: He who ate of this plant, i. e. garlic, should not come to the mosques. In the narration of Zubair, there is only a mention of" battle" and not of Khaybar. Sahih Muslim 561a \ \ \ See also:\ \ \ \ \ \ ***

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، أَنَّ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ ثُومًا أَوْ بَصَلاً فَلْيَعْتَزِلْنَا - أَوْ لِيَعْتَزِلْ مَسْجِدَنَا - وَلْيَقْعُدْ فِي بَيْتِهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَإِنَّهُ أُتِيَ بِبَدْرٍ فِيهِ خَضِرَاتٌ مِنَ الْبُقُولِ فَوَجَدَ لَهَا رِيحًا فَسَأَلَ فَأُخْبِرَ بِمَا فِيهَا مِنَ الْبُقُولِ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ قَرِّبُوهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ إِلَى بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ كَانَ مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ كَرِهَ أَكْلَهَا قَالَ ‏"‏ كُلْ فَإِنِّي أُنَاجِي مَنْ لاَ تُنَاجِي ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ بِبَدْرٍ فَسَّرَهُ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ طَبَقٌ

Jabir b. ‘Abd Allah reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as sayings: He who eats garlic or onion must keep away from us. Or he said: must keep away from our mosque or must sit in his house. A dish containing green vegetables was brought to him, and noticing that it had an odour he asked (about it). He was told that it contained some vegetables. He then said: Bring it near, to one of his companion who was with him. When he saw it, he abominated eating it, and said: eat for I hold intimate converse with one with whom you do not. Ahmad b. Salih said: Ibn Wahb explained the word badr as meaning dish. Sunan Abi Dawud 3822\ ***

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ فَلاَ يَقْرَبَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:\ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: He who eats from this plant should not come near the mosques. Sunan Abi Dawud 3825\ ***

حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هِلاَلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلاَلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ، قَالَ أَكَلْتُ ثُومًا فَأَتَيْتُ مُصَلَّى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَقَدْ سُبِقْتُ بِرَكْعَةٍ فَلَمَّا دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ وَجَدَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم رِيحَ الثُّومِ فَلَمَّا قَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم صَلاَتَهُ قَالَ ‏"‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ فَلاَ يَقْرَبْنَا حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ رِيحُهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ أَوْ ‏"‏ رِيحُهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَلَمَّا قَضَيْتُ الصَّلاَةَ جِئْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ لَتُعْطِيَنِّي يَدَكَ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَدْخَلْتُ يَدَهُ فِي كُمِّ قَمِيصِي إِلَى صَدْرِي فَإِذَا أَنَا مَعْصُوبُ الصَّدْرِ قَالَ ‏"‏ إِنَّ لَكَ عُذْرًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Narrated Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah:\ I ate garlic and came to the place where the Prophet (ﷺ) was praying; one rak'ah of prayer had been performed when I joined. When I entered the mosque, the Prophet (ﷺ) noticed the odour of garlic.\ When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) finished his prayer, he said: He who eats from this plant should not come near us until its odour has gone away.\ When I finished the prayer, I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: Messenger of Allah, do give me your hand. Then I put his hand in the sleeve of my shirt, carrying it to my chest to show that my chest was fastened with a belt. He said: You have a (valid) excuse. Sunan Abi Dawud 3826\ ***

حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَظِيمِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَيْسَرَةَ، - يَعْنِي الْعَطَّارَ - عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنْ هَاتَيْنِ الشَّجَرَتَيْنِ وَقَالَ ‏"‏ مَنْ أَكَلَهُمَا فَلاَ يَقْرَبَنَّ مَسْجِدَنَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ ‏"‏ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لاَ بُدَّ آكِلِيهِمَا فَأَمِيتُوهُمَا طَبْخًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ يَعْنِي الْبَصَلَ وَالثُّومَ ‏.‏

Narrated Mu'awiyah ibn Qurrah:\ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade these two plants (i.e. garlic and onions), and he said: He who eats them should not come near our mosque. If it is necessary to eat them, make them dead by cooking, that is, onions and garlic. Sunan Abi Dawud 3827\ ***

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءٌ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ مَنْ أَكَلَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَوَّلَ يَوْمٍ ‏"‏ الثُّومِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏"‏ الثُّومِ وَالْبَصَلِ وَالْكُرَّاثِ فَلاَ يَقْرَبْنَا فِي مَسَاجِدِنَا فَإِنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ تَتَأَذَّى مِمَّا يَتَأَذَّى مِنْهُ الإِنْسُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated that Jabir said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever eats of this plant' - the first time he said 'garlic' then he said, 'garlic, onions and leeks' \[1] - 'let him not approach us in our Masjids, for the angels are offended by that which offends mankinds.'"\ \[1] In Fath, Al-Bari, Ibn Hajar is of the opinion that it was Ibn Juraij who was talking, explaining that 'Ata' - who reported it from Jabir - narrated it both ways.
