Umar kills his son by flogging

[ (17047) – أخبرنا عبد الرزاق قال : أخبرنا معمر عن الزهري عن سالم عن ابن عمر قال : شرب أخي – عبد الرحمن بن عمر (1) – وشرب معه أبو سروعة عقبة (2) بن الحارث ، وهما بمصر في خلافة عمر ، فسكرا ، فلما أصبحا انطلقا إلى عمرو بن العاص ، وهو أمير مصر ، فقالا : طهرنا ، فإنا قد سكرنا من شراب شربناه ، فقال عبد الله : فذكر لي أخي أنه سكر ، فقلت : ادخل الدار أطهرك ، ولم أشعر أنهماأتيا عمروا ، فأخبرني أخي أنه قد أخبر الامير بذلك ، فقال عبد الله : لا يحلق القوم على رؤوس الناس ، ادخل الدار أحلقك – وكانوا إذ ذاك يحلقون مع الحدود – فدخل الدار ، فقال عبد الله : فحلقت أخي بيدي ثم جلدهم عمرو ، فسمع بذلك عمر ، فكتب إلى عمرو أن ابعث إلي بعبد الرحمن على قتب ، ففعل ذلك ، فلما قدم على عمر جلده وعاقبه لمكانه منه ، ثم أرسله ، فلبث شهرا صحيحا ثم أصابه قدره فمات ، فيحسب عامة الناس أنما مات من جلد عمر ، ولم يمت من جلد عمر.
Abul Razzaq said Muammar informed us on the authority of Al-Zuhri, on the authority of Salem, on the authority of Ibn Omar.
He said: My brother Abdul-Rahman Ibn Umar Abu Suro'ah drank with him, Ibn al-Harith (son of the Lion), while they were both in Egypt during the caliphate of Omar, and they both got drunk. And when it was morning, they both went to Amir ibn al-Aas, the Amir of Egypt, so they both said: Purify us, for we got drunk from a drink we drank, and Abdullah said, so my brother mentioned to me that he was drunk, so I said: Enter the house I will purify you, and I did not feel that they had desired to live. So my brother told me that he had told the prince about that, and Abdullah said: Not he flogs the folks over the heads of the people. Enter the home, and I will flog you. And then they were flogged in accordance with the law. So he entered the house, and Abdullah said: So I flogged my brother with my hand, then Amir flogged them. When Omar heard of that, he wrote to Amir to "send me Abdul Rahman on a pole." So he did that, and when he proceeded to Omar, he flogged and punished him for his position with him, then sent him. So he waited for a whole month, then his fate befell him, and he died, so most people think that he died from the flogging of Omar, and he did not die from the flogging of Omar.
__________ (1) هو الذي يكنى أبا شحمة ، وهو الاوسط ، ولعمر ثلاثة بنين يسمون عبد الرحمن. (2) في الاصل هنا وفي السادس جميعا (أبو سروعة بن عقبة) ولكن في الاصابة وغيرها أن عقبة بن الحارث نفسه يكنى أبا سروعة ، فليحرر.
Ibn Hajar Rahimahu Allah said in Al-Isabah:
وأما أهل العراق فيقولون إنه مات تحت السياط وهو غلط انتهىوقد أخرج عبد الرزاق القصة مطولة عن معمر بالسند المذكور وهو صحيح
As for the people of Iraq, they say that he died under the whips, and this is a mistake. It is over. Abd al-Razzaq brought out a lengthy story on the authority of Muammar with the aforementioned chain of narrators, and it is authentic.
