# Uncharitable Readings

Often, Christians attempt to discredit the Quran by reading it in the most uncharitable light. The same can be done with the Bible.

Jesus promotes suicide and self-mutilation

[Mark 9:](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV)

> #### Temptations to Sin
>
> 42 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,\[[g](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24574g)] it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin,\[[h](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24575h)] cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go to hell,\[[i](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24575i)] to the unquenchable fire.\[[j](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24575j)] 45 And if your foot causes you to sin,\[[k](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24576k)] cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.\[[l](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24576l)]\[[m](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24576m)] 47 And if your eye causes you to sin,\[[n](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24577n)] pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,\[[o](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark+9\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-24577o)] 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

[Matthew 5:28-32](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew+5\&version=RSV):

> #### Concerning Adultery
>
> 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.\[[d](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew+5\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-23263d)] 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.\[[e](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew+5\&version=RSV#fen-RSV-23264e)]
>
> #### Concerning Divorce
>
> 31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
